The Dutch improvisational jazz sensation “Available Jelly” will perform live at Perspective2, 319 E. Grand River Ave., on Thursday, February 17th at 7:30pm. This special performance marks the band’s first stop on their 2011 Mid-West tour.
Composed of some of the Netherlands’ top improvisers, the five-piece pocket brass band is known for their heart-felt, natural way of blending written material and improvisation. Formed in 1995, “Available Jelly “ is led by musician Michael Moore on alto sax and clarinet, Eric Boeren on cornet, Wolter Wierbos on trombone, Gregg Moore on tuba, and Michael Vatcher on percussion.
Their unique sound brings together a variety of influences ranging from traditional New Orleans jazz while blending contemporary composition techniques, South-African rhythms and ethnic music as they create passionate and energetic performances.
Their sound is best known to include baroque like arrangements for the wind instruments, elaborate hymns and plain sweet melodies that develop into playful yet intriguing listening. The night will feature the group’s original songs along with an eclectic mix of jazz, world music and popular songs.
“We are so excited to make Old Town and Perspective2 the first stop on our Mid-West tour and are looking forward to showcasing our talents to music lovers in Lansing,” said Carolyn Muntz the band’s coordinator. “Guests can expect the unexpected as we perform our top hits from Europe stirred up with improvisations that “Available Jelly” has become known for.”
“Available Jelly” is perfect for exposing local music enthusiasts to popular improvisational jazz from other parts of the world,” said Ann Hill, Owner of Perspective2. “We are excited to welcome them to Old Town and are honored to be the first stop on their Mid-West tour. ”
